• meeting with clients for initial or ongoing sessions as mutually agreed
• developing case plans or goals plans in line with the client’s aspirations
• encouraging clients to talk about issues they feel they cannot normally share with others drawing on approved and evidence based techniques
• keeping accurate and confidential case notes for record purposes
• supporting clients to make decisions and choices regarding possible ways forward
• recognizing when a client requires further assistance and make relevant referrals
• ensuring as a practitioner they attend supervision with a qualified professional
• attending relevant professional development training to maintain currency of practice.
Many advertised roles will require a person to be eligible for registration through AHPRA while others may accept eligibility for membership through other bodies (though not often).
Courses vary from small workshops with no prior relevant experience required, through to tertiary qualifications, however most professionals will have a degree or diploma in counselling, psychology or social work.
